Early Life And Education

Sushil Kumar Modi was born on January 5, 1952, in Patna, India. He is the son of Moti Lal Modi and Ratna Devi and has two brothers, Rameshwar Prasad Modi and Satishwar Prasad Modi.

Modi attended Patna Science College and graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Botany.

He then enrolled in the Master of Science in Botany program at Patna University but left the course midway to join the social movement started by Jai Prakash Narayan.

Career

Sushil Kumar Modi started his political journey as a student activist at Patna University in the 1970s.

During this time, he served as the General Secretary of the Students’ Union, while his future political rival, Lalu Prasad Yadav, held the position of President. Modi actively participated in the Bihar Student Movement in 1974 and the JP Movement.

After joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1990, Modi became the Chief Whip of the BJP Bihar Legislature Party.

He then served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly from 1996 to 2004. During this period, he was key in exposing the infamous Fodder Scam through Public Interest Litigation.

2004, Modi was elected to the Lok Sabha (lower house of Parliament). Following the NDA’s victory in the 2005 Bihar elections, he became the Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister, a position he held for two terms (2005-2013 and 2017-2020).

As Finance Minister, Modi implemented significant financial reforms and was known for his focus on fiscal discipline.
